Local Dry Friction on Spline Shaft? Zoned Greasing Works Better Than Full Grease Replacement

Release time:2026-06-12 Source: Author: Click quantity:25

When a rotary spline suffers from partial dry friction and jamming, most people choose full grease replacement, which rarely solves the problem. Due to varying load, rotating speed and temperature across different sections, universal greasing leads to uneven lubrication. Zoned greasing is a more efficient solution.

  1. Divide and mark zones

Split the spline into independent lubrication areas according to working conditions, and mark sections with heavy load, high speed or high contamination risks clearly.

  2. Apply grease section by section during operation
Add grease to each zone one by one while the equipment runs at low speed. The rotation helps the grease spread evenly on the tooth surfaces and prevents leakage from over-lubrication.
  3. Prioritize worn areas
For dry and jammed parts, remove old grease and metal debris first, then apply high-adhesion lubricant. Increase greasing frequency if needed to form a stable oil film.
  4. Dynamic running test
Run the device at low speed after lubrication. Add a small amount of grease again to areas with abnormal noise or resistance until the spline operates smoothly.
  5. Custom maintenance schedules
Set different lubrication intervals based on wear conditions. Shorten cycles for heavy-load zones and adopt regular maintenance for light-load areas to avoid excess or insufficient lubrication.

The service life of rotary splines depends on detailed lubrication management. Adopt zoned greasing as a daily routine. Proper lubricant selection, reasonable dosage and regular cleaning can keep splines running steadily and avoid severe breakdowns.
